Alligator Snapping Turtle Alligator snapping turtle
rdfs:comment
This seemingly Harmless inhabitant of North Americas wetlands is actually a very feisty reptile. The Alligator Snapping turtle lies at the bottom of lakes or rivers waiting for food to come to it, it then clamps shut its jaws with enough force to cost a human a finger or a toe. Even the mighty American Alligator would do well to avoid this creature. It will eat anything from Aquatic Vegetation to Insects, Fish, Eggs or whatever else comes its way. They can be kept in captivity and are thought to be able to live up to 100 Years. They are extremely dangerous These turtles are very large. Average specimens can grow to 26 inches (shell length) and between 155 and 175 pounds. They have a spiked shell and a big head. Although it was once believed to be only one species, a recent study suggests that it is actually three separate species; Macrochelys temminckii, Macrochelys suwanniensis, and Macrochelys apalachicolae. The alligator snapping turtle is given its name because of its immensely powerful jaws and long, spring-like neck, as well as distinct ridges on its shell that are similar to the rough, ridged skin of an alligator.
