n3:abstract
In 2381, the Demeter was refitted with a quantum slipstream drive and assigned to Project Full Circle: a Starfleet expeditionary force into the Delta Quadrant. The Demeter was also equipped with airponics bays and storage facilities for biological resources. (VOY novel: Full Circle) The Demeter, along with the USS Planck and USS Quirinal were a part of the fleet sent to reestablish contact with the race known as the Children of the Storm. The Demeter was left on the edge of the system while the other two ships entered the system to make contact. After several days of no communication, the Demeter entered the system to resupply the Planck with foodstuffs, its approach drew the attention of the Children who revered the plant-based life growing on the ship, which the Children referred to as "the simple life." Following the confrontation that destroyed the Planck, the Children dragged the Demeter deeper into their home system, to stave off destruction Captain O'Donnell ordered the crew to plant everything available around the clock on board the ship. (VOY novel: Children of the Storm)
