Doc Severinsen
rdfs:comment
Doc Severinsen — incorrectly billed as Doc Severinson for his role as "Muffin Calhoun" on BW: "Road to Nashville" — is perhaps best known as the longtime leader of the NBC Orchestra on Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show. He is so indelibly associated with the jazz trumpet that he has found a career in semi-retirement handmaking a line of premium trumpets for other musicians. His work on The Bionic Woman is one of the few times he has been credited as an actor, although he was a regular performer in sketches on The Tonight Show.

Following a stint in the US Army during World War II, Severinsen toured briefly with jazz greats Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey before joining Johnny Carson's first version of the NBC Orchestra (now called The Tonight Show Band) as first trumpet in 1962. By 1967, he was leading the group and retained the position until Carson's retirement in 1992. His position allowed him to introduce American audiences to a wide range of jazz standards. He has also had a long recording career outside of his work on The Tonight Show. Some of that work has subsequently been used as theme material on television programs, including a rendition of Georgia on My Mind, which fronted Designing Women's later seasons, and the CBS news program, Sunday Morning. His work on The Bionic Woman is one of the few times he has been credited as an actor, although he was a regular performer in sketches on The Tonight Show.
