On occasion Luther and his men are stealing Ponderosa wood from land they believe belongs to them. Luther built the Truckee Strip for his wife but she died and therefore he wants to leave the land to Amy. Luther has given orders than any Cartwright tresspassing on his land should be shot on sight. After sleeping on it and a confrontation with Ben he tells Little Joe that it's up to Amy to decide what she wants. His joy is soon turned to sorrow when his daughter is mortally wounded by his ranch hand Jessup.
