n13:abstract
The 2001 Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1, 2001, and lasted until November 30, 2001. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin. Like in 2000, the United States felt relatively little impact from any tropical cyclones. However, the United States did feel Tropical Storm Allison, which was the costliest natural disaster in Texas, as it caused over $5,000,000,000 (2001 USD) in damage, mostly in Houston. Allison stalled over Texas and produced widespread flash flooding, and then it re-emerged into the Gulf of Mexico, strengthened into a subtropical storm later on (but not in the Gulf of Mexico), then made landfall in central Louisiana as a subtropical depression. Allison re-strengthened into a subtropical storm over Louisiana. Allison moved east-northeast across the East Coast of the United States. It then emerged into the Atlantic Ocean near New Jersey, then turned east-northeast and out to sea, after briefly re-strengthening into a subtropical storm. Aside from Allison, Tropical Storm Barry made landfall as a near hurricane-strength tropical storm in the Florida Panhandle. In addition, Hurricane Iris made landfall in Belize as a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. Hurricane Michelle was a Category 4 hurricane that formed in November and struck western Cuba as a 140 mph hurricane. Michelle was the first Category 4 hurricane to strike Cuba since Hurricane Fox of 1952. Later on though, Hurricane Dennis of 2005. Also, 2001 marked the second year in a row that a hurricane did not hit the United States. This was the first gap since the 1981-1982 gap, in which no hurricanes in the United States. This gap ended in 2002 when Hurricane Lili struck Louisiana as a Category 1 hurricane. Finally, 2001 was notable because of the formation of three November hurricanes, Michelle, Noel, and Olga. This is something even 2005 doesn't hold. The 2001 Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1st, 2001 and ended November 30th, 2001.
