Fu chiamata così in onore di Amroth, il Re Elfico che morì annegato al largo delle sue coste tentando di ritornare a nuoto nella Terra di Mezzo. Dol Amroth was a feudal principality which formed part of the Kingdom of Gondor in the southern reaches of that realm. Zu besonderer Berühmtheit stieg Dol Amroth deshalb auf, weil bis zum Anfang des Dritten Jahrtausends des D.Z. die Elben Lothlóriens von dort ihre Fahrt nach Valinor antraten, anstatt zu den weiter entfernten Grauen Anfurten zu reisen. Es hieß, einige Elben wären kurze Zeit in der prachtvollen Stadt geblieben und es hieß auch, es hätte einige Verbindungen gegeben zwischen ihnen und den dort lebenden Menschen, in denen das Blut der Dúnedain noch beinahe rein floss. Het wordt geregeerd door prinsen die Elfenbloed in zich hadden. De stad werd gesticht door Galador rond 2000 in de Derde Era. Daar zou het dienen als verdedigingsfort tegen de kapers. De Grootvader van Galador, Adrahil I, was al prins van Dor-en-Ernil. Zijn zoon Imrazôr, de Númenoreaan, was getrouwd met de elf Mithrellas, hierna claimde de Prinsen van Dol Amroth dat ze elfenbloed hadden. Nadat Imrazôr stierf, stichtte zijn zoon, Galador, Dol Amroth. Dol Amroth was vernoemd naar Amroth en lag op een heuvel. Ook lag de stad ten noorden van de elfenhaven Edhellond. In de stad staat Tirith Aear (Waakzaamheid/Wacht op Zee) waarvan mensen de zee in de gaten kunnen houden. De stad lag aan de Cobas Haven in de Baai van Belfalas. Tijdens de Oorlog om de Ring rijdt Prins Imrahil met zijn Zwanenridders en 700 voetvolk naar Minas Tirith om de stad te verdedigen. Een ander groot leger gaat naar Lebennin om de Mondingen van de Anduin te beschermen tegen de Kapers. Imrahil wordt later de adviseur van Koning Aragorn Elessar.
