A ficathon is a challenge in which each participant is assigned to write fan fiction based on another participant's request. Some ficathons are specific to a particular fandom; others are open to many or all fandoms. Many ficathons are associated with LiveJournal communities or other social networking sites, and the fan fiction is first posted to the community. (It may then subsequently be posted elsewhere by the author, for example, to his/her own website or blog.) Typically, ficathons are run in the following manner: * Each participant submits a request in which s/he offers several "prompts", or options of acceptable topics and/or fandoms for the story s/he wants written. * These requests are then redistributed (by the people running the ficathon), so that each participant gets someone else's list. * From this, the participant selects one prompt to which s/he writes a story. * All of the stories must be written and submitted by a predetermined deadline, after which they are posted. Sometimes stories are posted anonymously for a period of time, after which the authors are revealed. Other ficathons do not keep the authors' identities a secret after stories are posted.
