Smith enjoyed a long and fruitful career in the National Hockey League behind the benches of the Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings, Phoenix Coyotes, every time as an assistant coach.

Smith enjoyed a long and fruitful career in the National Hockey League behind the benches of the Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings, Phoenix Coyotes, every time as an assistant coach. In 2008, Smith joined SKA St. Petersburg of the Kontinental Hockey League as head coach. He was nominated to the 2009 and 2010 KHL All-Star Game, coaching Team Jagr, made up of the best non-Russian players of the league.
