When young he would often make his own puppet theater to amuse himself. His mother, foreshadowing his future as an entertainer, often would tell him to "save it for the stage." At age 13, he survived the infamous 1944 Hartford Circus Fire which killed 169 people in Connecticut. As a result, he never sat in an audience again through the remainder of his life. Because of the event's trauma, he rarely attended theater, stating that the large crowds reminded him of what happened that day. As a boy, Reilly developed a love for opera and desired to become an opera singer. He entered the Hartt School of Music as a voice major but eventual Nelson Reilly appears as a panelist on The Match Game in "Mr. Saturday Knight". Charles Nelson Reilly (January 13, 1931 - May 25, 2007) was a BLANK best known for BLANK. He gained fame by becoming what he described as a "game show BLANK" in the 1970s and 80s. He was a regular on programs like "BLANK Game" and "Hollywood BLANKS," often wearing giant glasses and colorful suits with ascots. He was also not a BLANK, despite what you may have heard. Charles Nelson Reilly (* 13. Januar 1931 in Bronx, New York; † 25. Charles Nelson Reilly (January 13, 1931 – May 25, 2007) was an American actor, comedian, director and drama teacher known for his comedic roles in theater, movies, children's television, animated cartoons, and as a panelist on the game show Match Game. Reilly was Dick Van Dyke's understudy in "Bye-Bye Birdie" on Broadway, where they met. Reilly won Broadway's 1962 Tony Award as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Musical) for portraying Bud Frump in "How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying". He was also nominated in the same category in 1964 for "Hello, Dolly!". He also earned a 1997 Tony nomination as Best Director (Play) for working with longtime pal Julie Harris in the revival of "The Gin Game". Reilly previously directed Harris in her Tony-winning role as Emily Dickinson in "The Belle of Amherst" (1976). Reilly's openly gay TV persona was quite ahead of its time. He recalled a network executive telling him, "They don't let queers on television." In rebuttal, he was a game show fixture on such shows as The Match Game (1962) and The Hollywood Squares (1966), was a guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson more than 95 times, earned an Emmy nomination for his second-banana work on The Ghost & Mrs. Muir (1968) and appeared on Saturday morning children's shows such as Lidsville (1971). He even was a game show host in his own right, on the syndicated Sweethearts (1988). Charles Nelson Reilly (January 13, 1931 - May 25 2007) is an American actor, director and drama teacher known for his comedic roles in movies, children's television, and animated cartoons, but undoubtedly he is best known for his regular appearances as a panelist on the 70's game show Match Game. He has achieved somewhat of a cult status for the good-natured zaniness of his characters. __NOEDITSECTION__ Image:Information-silk.png|Character Template rect 0 0 20 20 Staff Template desc none Charles Nelson Reilly Real Name Unknown Job Titles Voice Actor Gender First publication Unknown Reilly was born in The Bronx, New York City, the son of Charles Joseph Reilly, an Irish Catholic commercial artist, and Signe Elvera Nelson, a Swedish Lutheran. He entered the Hartt School of Music as a voice major but eventually abandoned this pursuit when he realized that he lacked the natural vocal talent to have a major career. However, opera remained a lifelong passion and he was a frequent guest on opera-themed radio programs, including the Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts. He directed opera productions for the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Dallas Opera, Portland Opera, San Diego Opera and Santa Fe Opera among others. He was good friends with opera singers Renée Fleming, Rod Gilfry, Roberta Peters and Eileen Farrell. Charles Nelson Reilly was an American actor, comedian, director and drama teacher.
