Zunächst war Arda nur ein Gesicht, eine Idee im Geiste llúvatars. Erst die Musik der Ainur schuf Arda in der Wirklichkeit, allerdings nur als dunkle „Rohform“. Einige der Ainur baten Ilúvatar, in die Welt hinabsteigen zu dürfen, um sie so zu formen, wie sie es in Ilúvatars Gesicht (wie es im Silmarillion genannt wird) gesehen hatten. Diese Ainur wurden Valar (jene mit mehr Macht) und Maiar (jene mit weniger Macht) genannt.
