Cynthia Dern, who for twenty years had masqueraded as Allison Goldman, was essentially the guilty party, since she, even when made aware of the captain's return, went ahead and set the bomb. Susan was injured trying to defuse the device, and the whole mess was only finally untangled after Cynthia attempted to murder Susan, whom she discovered had survived, and Susan, in self-defense, turned the tables.
