Saint Anselm of Canterbury, born 1034 (or 1033) in Aosta, Aosta Valley, Italy, died on 21 April 1109 in Canterbury, England, was a medieval philosopher and theologian. Anselm of Canterbury (c. 1033 – 21 April 1109) was an Italian, a Benedictine monk, a philosopher, and a prelate of the church who held the office of Archbishop of Canterbury from 1093 to 1109. Called the founder of scholasticism, he is famous in the West as the originator of the ontological argument for the existence of God. In 1720, Anselm was recognized as a saint by Pope Clement XI. __TOC__ Saint Anselm, born Anselmo d'Aosta, was a famed medieval theologian, Bishop of Canterbury, and Catholic saint. Leaving home at 23, he wandered throughout Burgundy and France, eventually entering a convent after coming to the attention of the abbot of Bec, where he began his writings. He eventually moved to England, where he became Archbishop of Canterbury. He was famous for his many theological writings and proofs, including several which concealed the path to the Holy Grail.
