To prevent his friend's suffering until the inevitable death from rabies, his owner Travis tearfully shoots Old Yeller. In "He's Too Sexy for His Fat", the dog is shot not for rabies, but for failing to relay a phone message. Brian's "death" in "Life of Brian" is revealed in "Inside Family Guy" to have occurred so he could star in a remake of Old Yeller in which he gets the drop on his owner. Old Yeller is a fictional dog based on a real dog named Elderly Screamer who lived in the American Midwest no sooner than 1825 but no later than 1907. The heart-warming adventures of Elderly Screamer were documented in the true-to-life children's fable Old Yeller, a story possibly about a farm, a family, and a dog, and then what happened to the farm, the family, and the dog. This is the one I probably got the most criticism over skipping. Everyone proclaims it a Disney classic, and the reason I didn't review it before is because...quite honestly, I had never seen it before. The reason? Well, everybody ruined the ending for me. I won't give it away here, but let's just say, if you know the ending, you kind of get the idea what kind of story it is, and even though I knew it was probably good, I kind of avoided it, saying to myself, "I much rather see a film I don't know the ending to." But Disneycember, rightfully so, has forced me to finally look at this film that's beloved by so many, and...yeah. It is about a boy and a stray dog in post-Civil War Texas. It is based upon the 1956 Newbery Honor-winning book of the same name by Fred Gipson. Gipson also co-wrote the screenplay with William Tunberg. Its success led to a sequel, Savage Sam, adapted from another Gipson book.
