According to the imposter Kirk, this course was the shortest route to the planet; however, the Enterprise would be traveling through the Romulan Neutral Zone.

Rator III was one of the worlds who claimed to be the new capital of the Romulan Star Empire after the destruction of Romulus. (The Path to 2409) Catherine Giltia funded the construction projects of the siblings of Taev Radaik on this planet. Also, from mid-2387 on, this planet was the seat of intense real estate speculation, just as Romii and Achernar Prime. (RIS Bouteina: "Real Estate Liberty") Annika Hansen was one of the riovs (commanders) who were part of the faction that supported Rator III's claims and it was the arrival point of the RIS Bouteina. In 2389, Seven of Nine was in an official visit to this planet. Also, Annika was invited to inaugurate the World of Warcraft Hall of Fame and was an inductee of the Hall of Fame as well. (RIS Bouteina: "Rator III Awaits") Both the Tal Prai'ex and the Romulan Senate was fighting among each other for primacy and Rator III was the base of one of the factions, whose planetary leaders claimed that it was the Senate. (TAS: "The Survivor") This planet was only mentioned in dialogue. According to Star Trek: Star Charts (pp. 61, 62, & 66; "United Federation of Planets I") and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), the Rator system was located in the Beta Quadrant. This was a binary system with a pair of K-class stars. According to a map of the Romulan Empire – prepared by the Stellar Archivist Lsel Essik, from the Romulan Master Data Catalog, in 2366 – Rator was identified as a Romulan system. In Star Trek Online, a new capital for the Romulan Star Empire was established on Rator III following Romulus' destruction in 2387.
