Darson was the commanding officer of the starship USS Adelphi when that ship made first contact at Ghorusda. Forty-seven crewpeople, including Captain Darson, died there in what came to be known at the Ghorusda Disaster. A board of inquiry officially found Darson responsible for carelessness about Ghorusdan cultural taboos, though many Starfleet personnel, (including William T. Riker, who lost two academy classmates in the incident) blamed Betazoid contact specialist Tam Elbrun for failing to warn Darson of the severity of Ghorusdan hostility.
