At that time, the Eletrix was on a joint Federation/Romulan mission of exploration with the Federation flagship USS Enterprise-E. The joint mission had been proposed in good faith by Praetor Gell Kamemor, but was used by the Tal Shiar to plant its agents in the Gamma Quadrant. The crew of the Eletrix later faked her destruction in order to get away from the Enterprise.

Upon reaching the other side, the cloaked Eletrix was detected by the USS Defiant. Upon being detected, the Eletrix fired upon the Defiant, starting the battle that would later see to the destruction of Starbase Deep Space 9.
