If a turtle doesn't have it's shell it's more than likely dead, Shells are fused to their spine. Like the above person mentioned, the turtle's soft body is surrounded by the shell. Turtles are not like mollusks, who can shed their shell. While we're familiar with Looney Tunes cartoons and the "Tortoise and the Hare" episodes, where the turtle took off its shell many times; it can not be done in real life.
