It was a descendant of the shaggy Daen-Horse with some Blood of the Númenórean Horse.There were several different sub-breeds: * Algraig - savage large Ponies of Enedhwaith and Hollin. * Angmareans - large shaggy, often ashen coloured ponies of northeastern Eriador, often savaged but also domesticated by the Angmarrim and Hillmen. * the Breelander - a hardy breed little larger than common Ponies, often chestnut, bred by the Breemen. * Dunhoths - a Race bred by the Hollin-Men * Dunland-Ponies - large Ponies, relatively pureblooded descendants of the archaic Daen-Horse. * Eglain - wild Horses of the Lone lands * the Evendims - savaged descendants of the royal horses of Annúminas. * Shire-Packhorses - larger than the common Hobbit Ponies but usually used as pack and draft animals. * Tinker-Ponies - small and agile Ponies bred by the Tinker-Folk. * Tundra Horses - a northern Breed common to southern Forochel.
