Hampshire College featured one of its professors, Charles Moorehouse (prof. of folklore) in the documentary Curse of the Blair Witch in 1999. The College is widely known for its alternative curriculum, focus on portfolios rather than distribution requirements, and reliance on narrative evaluations instead of grades and GPAs. It is known particularly for facilitating the study of film, music, theater and the visual arts. In some fields, it is among the top undergraduate institutions in percentage of graduates who enroll in graduate school. Fifty-six percent of its alumni have at least one graduate degree and it is ranked 30th among all US colleges in the percentage of its graduates who go on to attain a doctorate degree (notably first among history doctorates). Hampshire College is inviting applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Queer Studies. We are seeking a candidate whose work is interdisciplinary and addresses the intersections of sexuality and gender with questions of race, class, and/or nation, transnationalism, citizenship, or dis/ability in the humanities, (performing or fine) arts, media and cultural studies, and/or social sciences. Hampshire College featured one of its professors, Charles Moorehouse (prof. of folklore) in the documentary Curse of the Blair Witch in 1999. Strength in queer theory and trans issues and theory is essential. In addition to introductory courses in queer and sexuality studies, the candidate will teach courses in their particular areas of specialization, contributing to Hampshire College’s interdisciplinary curriculum. The successful candidate will be in a position both to create a Queer Studies Program at Hampshire and to build the newly established Five College Certificate Program in Queer and Sexuality studies. Required qualifications include: Ph.D. in hand by the time of the appointment, with a specialization in queer studies; discipline open. A successful candidate will show promise as a dedicated, charismatic teacher with an interest in mentoring student projects that are often highly interdisciplinary in nature. We also expect evidence of strong potential for innovative scholarship and/or artistic practice. A demonstrated record of working with diverse students and faculty, particularly LGBTQ students, and a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity are required. Hampshire is part of the Five College Consortium (including Amherst, Mt Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts). The Pioneer Valley has long been considered one of the most welcoming and inclusive places in the country for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, and this positive climate attracts many LGBT and LGBT-supportive students, staff, and faculty to the Five Colleges. Review of applications will begin November 15, 2012, and continue until the position is filled. Please submit as PDFs a letter of application, a CV, one writing sample not to exceed 30 pages, sample course syllabi and three (3) letters of recommendation to . www.hampshire.edu Hampshire College is an equal opportunity institution, committed to diversity in education and employment.
