Gargamel, Azrael, and Scruple visited the castle in search of the quill, with the Smurflings following after them, so that Gargamel can have a map that will lead him straight to the Smurf Village, and Scruple can easily pass his re-entry exam at the Wizard's School. The Smurflings found the quill first, but Gargamel made off with the quill in order to proceed with his plan. The Smurflings raced to the village to warn Papa Smurf about Gargamel having the quill, who then worked to thwart Gargamel's plan by making a duplicate magic quill that makes mistakes and switching it with the real quill so that the fake quill will lead Gargamel away from the village. The fake quill not only worked toward that end, but it also caused Scruple to fail his re-entry exam, which meant that Gargamel would be stuck having Scruple as his apprentice. With the Enchanted Quill safely out of Gargamel's hands, the Smurfs returned it to Castle Quill where it would remain protected.
