In the early nineties, Phillips quit Nintendo of America and joined several companies such as LucasArts, THQ and Microsoft before starting his own business (Howard Phillips Consulting) and becoming the studio director of Chair Entertainment Group, a game developer based in Utah. Howard Phillips (1890-1968) was an American author. He wrote a chronicle of Miskatonic University's expedition to Antarctica in the 1920s. He also became an expert on the Old Ones. In May 1968, he and his wife Sonia attended an HPL concert at the Fillmore in San Francisco. With them were two Old Ones. The party watched HPL rehearse. The Old Ones enjoyed HPL's music. Phillips could only describe what he heard as "interesting".

Howard Phillips is the creator and former writer of Nintendo Fun Club News and Nintendo Power. During the concert that evening, an iceberg which had broken off from the Ross Ice Shelf nearly a year earlier and had made its way to San Francisco deposited a swarm of shoggoths in the city. One made its way to the Fillmore, and decapitated the Old Ones and Phillips before succumbing to a napalm attack. Sonia Phillips escaped the Fillmore with the help of HPL.
