The Steve Miller Band is an American rock/blues band whose song "I Wanna Make The World Turn Around" appeared in the episode "Down for the Count (Part II)" of the series Miami Vice. The Steve Miller Band is an American rock band formed in 1966 in San Francisco, California. The band is led by Steve Miller on guitar and lead vocals. It is best known today for a string of (mainly) mid-to-late 1970s hit singles that are staples of classic rock radio, as well as several earlier psychedelic rock albums. Miller left his first band to move to San Francisco and form the Steve Miller Blues Band. Shortly after Harvey Kornspan negotiated the band’s landmark contract with Capitol Records in 1967, the band shortened its name to the Steve Miller Band. In February 1968, the band recorded its debut album, Children of the Future. It went on to produce the albums Sailor, Brave New World, Your Saving Grace, Number 5, Rock Love and more. The band's Greatest Hits 1974–78, released in 1978, sold over 13 million copies. The band continued to produce more albums and in 2014 toured with the rock band Journey In 2016, Steve Miller was inducted as a solo artist in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1965, after moving to Chicago to play the blues, Steve Miller and keyboardist Barry Goldberg founded the Goldberg-Miller Blues Band. Miller left the group to go to San Francisco, where the psychedelic scene was flourishing. He then formed the Steve Miller Blues Band. Harvey Kornspan, managing partner, wrote and negotiated the band's landmark contract ($860,000 over five years as well as $25,000 of promotion money that was to be spent at the band's discretion) with Capitol/EMI Records then-president Alan Livingston in 1967. Shortly after, the band's name was shortened to the Steve Miller Band in order to broaden its appeal... (Read more at Wikipedia) Steve Miller was the son of English entertainer The Glenn Miller Band and Classical Hollywood actress Ann Miller, the brother of lawyer, bon viveur, and rock singer Milliband Milliband, and the uncle of English politicians David and Ed Milliband. He grew up loving the blues, and learned how to read and write music while soliciting many a guitar chord from other artists. After Steve's initial success as a Quiznos delivery boy, he moved to San Francisco in 1966 during the second coming of the blues, and formed Stephen Miller and the Miller Lites along with his friends Boz Scaggs, Lonnie Turner, Jim Peterman, and Tim Poppinfresh. One time Miller was caught stealing a riff from another song and was charged $38 dollars for his crime. After this almost disastrous blow to his career, he decided that enough was enough and that he should start writing some original songs right now; Steve later was quoted saying that he wished he hadn't have done this. In an attempt to shed their image of thievery, the band changed their name to The Steve Miller Experience Starring Johnny Appleseed, but later learned that a young punk named Jimi Hendrix had already taken up a similar name for his band, so they settled on the simplistic "Steve Miller Band" name, chosen in honor of Steve's father who went missing-in-action during World War II. Of course there are other members, but the band's had such as High Turnover Rate in this area that listing them all would turn this page into a Doorstopper. Their initial career was marked by a fusion of Psychedelic Rock with Blues-Rock with heavy jamming, improvisation and occasional bits of other genres like Country and Folk. This style, as showcased on every album between Children of the Future and Recall the Beginning, proved reasonably popular and well-received, with one hit in the song "Space Cowboy". Starting with The Joker, Miller toned down the jamming and made his brand of space blues more accessible, with the result being a string of five albums that made the band really, really popular and spawned some famous hits like "The Joker", "Swingtown", "Fly Like an Eagle", "Take the Money and Run", "Rock'n Me", "Jet Airliner", "Jungle Love" and "Abracadabra". The band's popularity entered a downward slide they never recovered from after Abracadabra, and they eventually retired from making albums after 1993, but they still tour every now and then.
