De Collaert kwam in 1778 in dienst van het Oostenrijkse leger en was sinds 1786 in Nederlandse dienst. In 1795 werd hij er luitenant-kolonel, in 1803 kolonel, in 1806 majoor-generaal en in 1815 luitenant-generaal. Hij deed mee aan de Slag van Waterloo. Baron de Collaert was afkomstig van en ligt begraven in Blehen, een kleine deelgemeente van de Belgische stad Hannuit."@nl . . In 1813 Collaert was appointed to command a French cavalry brigade in Germany. That year he led his horsemen at Dresden and Leipzig. In February 1814 he fought at Mormans. Returning to the newly created Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1815, he was soon appointed lieutenant general of its cavalry.
