Harry Gant won his first race of the year, holding off Darrell Waltrip by some eleven seconds. The race was run in its entirety on a Monday after the race was totally rained out on its scheduled date on Sunday. During the race on lap 71 a huge crash that involved 17 cars took out several of the top contenders. During the crash Kyle Petty suffered a broken leg that would keep him out of action for four months. After the accident the race went totally caution free with Dale Earnhardt and Darrell Waltrip taking control and driving away from everybody. However Harry Gant was able to get much better fuel mileage and was able to go farther on a tank of gas and hence make one pit stop less then the rest of the field. Dale Earnhardt finished 3rd to retake the points lead by four markers on Ricky Rudd who had a plug wire come off early in the race, Rudd would finish in 13th place, 2 laps down. Stats"@en .
