Historically, it has been prevented from becoming a regional power because it shared borders with far stronger nations Prussia (later Germany) and Russia (later Soviet Union). At various points in its history, Poland has been partitioned entirely off the map, most notably in 1795, when it was divided up by Austria, Prussia, and Russia. Poland was reconstituted as a puppet kingdom by Germany and Austria-Hungary during World War I. The victorious Entente powers established the country's independence as the Second Polish Republic in 1918. It became a casus belli for World War II when it was occupied and partitioned once again by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in 1939. It emerged several years later as the socialist People's Republic of Poland within the Eastern Bloc, under strong Soviet influence. During the Revolutions of 1989, communist rule was overthrown and the Third Polish Republic was established. The map of Poland has changed drastically over the centuries, mainly due to the various partitions, causing Poland to slide gradually from Eastern Europe to Central Europe, although where the two regions divide precisely is open to interpretation. The most dramatic example of this is the comparison of the pre- and post-WWII maps of the nation, of which it is often said with some truth that "Stalin pushed Poland westward." Thus, the capital city Warsaw, formerly near the western border of the country, is now closer to the eastern border. The current Polish borders (in effect since 1945) include a sizable Baltic Sea coast, whereas some previous Polands were landlocked."@en . . . "Flag of Poland corrected .svg"@en . . . . The first Polish state was born in 966 and the first Polish kingdom emerged in 1025. In 1569, Poland and Lithuania united to form the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. BY 1795, this commonwealth has collapsed and for next 123 years Polish nation remained without sovereignty. In 1918, it again became a sovereign state, but it was rather short lived - it lost its independence during the Second World War. After the War, Poland became a satellite state of the former Soviet Union. However, by 1989 it could assert its real sovereignty and emerged as a sovereign state in its own right, known informally as the Third Polish Republic. The establishment of a Polish state is often identified with the adoption of Christianityby its ruler Mieszko I in 966, over the territory similar to that of present-day Poland. The Kingdom of Poland was formed in 1025, and in 1569 it cemented a long associationwith the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by signing the Union of Lublin, forming the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Poland regained its independence as the Second Polish Republic in 1918. The People's Republic was declared in 1952 although Poland was a client state of the Soviet Union from the closing days of the war. Originally encompassing the small city of Warsaw (which was later renamed, Delicje and developed into a sprawling metropolis), within the next few years it developed into a force to be reckoned with, in no small part due to Lewis's many construction projects for World Wonders, the founding of the religion Sausage Worship, and Lewis taking advantage of the Polish Unique Ability, Solidarity, which granted him free social policies for each new technological era the empire entered, this enabling him to make more wonders. Finally, in the 1800s, Poland had grown to be the most technologically-advanced civ in the world. The other players, taking notice, began plotting and began stealing technologies from Polish cities. However, by then, Lewis had developed tanks, and when Duncan's India and Rythian's Sweden declared war, the invading Indian musketmen and Swedish Caroleans were driven back by Polish tanks, destroyers and winged hussars. Poland then invaded India, swiftly capturing the capital, City of Dongs, then capturing and razing the cities of Vajayna and Sack of Balls, before seizing the Swedish capital Malmö. Lewis also invaded Sjin's Shoshone Empire with paratroopers and more tanks, capturing the cities of Baba Helpme and Threegemsheepy, which also gave him access to uranium for nuclear weapons. He razed Baba Helpme, but made the city of Warsaw were the Uranium was. The total area of Poland is 312,679 km² (120,728 sq mi), making it the 69th largest country in the world. The first Polish state was baptized in 966, within territory very similar to the present boundaries of Poland. Poland became a kingdom in 1025, and in 1569 it cemented a long association with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by uniting to form the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Commonwealth collapsed in 1795. Poland regained its independence in 1918 after World War I but lost it afterwards, as the Soviet Union invaded it for the second time, after losing the first war in 1920 after the Battle of Wistula river. The Soviets have reshaped the territorial borders of Poland, annexing most of the Eastern territory into the Soviet Ukrainian Republic, while in turn annexing Germany's eastern territories to Poland in exchange for relative peace. Though supposedly an independent nation, Poland was effectively controlled by the Soviet Union and treated little better than a slave country, with all significant decisions made at the Kremlin and an extremely harsh occupation leveled on the common man. While Polish forces loyal to the legitimate Republican government in exile in London did conduct a guerilla war against the occupying Soviets and their local auxiliaries and many other Poles defied the Communist regime covertly, such actions were punished brutally and Soviet reprisals exacted a grisly cost for even the most minor resistance. One example included the case of Torun shortly before the outbreak of open war between the Allies and the Soviets, where villagers who had escaped from an inhumane Soviet chemical weapons test were sheltered by civilians and the local underground in a village just outside the city, which led Stalin and Marshall Gradenko to order the complete destruction of all settlements on the outskirts of Torun and the immediate execution of all caught nearby, an order that was savagely carried out by the Soviet Air Force and its paratroopers. Poland also acted as the staging grounds of the USSR attack on Germany. Unfortunately for Stalin and his puppets, the war turned against him and Allied forces, most notably including American forced led by General Carville, liberated Poland in conjunction with the surviving Polish resistance as the puppet regime collapsed as the Red Army fled. After the war, Poland remained neutral,as the victors- in an attempt to avoid tensions in the Ukranian areas they were occupying- did not return them the lands belonging to Poland before the Soviet occupation. Nevertheless, the country developed a thriving and successful economy and accomplished, well working political system. When the First Tiberium War begun, Poland became a battlefield once more, this time in the war between Nod and GDI. Białystok, a city in the eastern parts of the country, suffered the worst, as it's civilian populace was killed and the attack blamed on GDI. Eventually, with the defeat of Nod, everything returned to normal. With the proliferation of Tiberium, the southern lands of Poland gradually turned into a Yellow Zone and the Bieszczady mountains slowly turn into a Red Zone. As of 2047, half of Poland is designated as a Yellow Zone, part of the Y-1 Zone, and the other as Blue Zone B-1/B-3."@en . . "120"^^ . . "Catholic"@en . . . . . . . . "-"@en . . "Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland still faces the lingering challenges of high unemployment, underdeveloped and dilapidated infrastructure, and a poor rural underclass. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. The Poland national men's ice hockey team is the national ice hockey team of Poland, and a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation. They are ranked 21st in the world in the IIHF World Rankings, but prior to the 1980s they were ranked as high as 6th internationally. Financed by state coal money from the 1950s to the 1970 the Polish hockey team was a regular contender for medals in international tournaments, vastly superior to the Finns and upsetting the Swedes and Czechs from time to time. In 1976 Poland beat the dominant Soviet Union 6-4 in the World Championships after being soundly defeated by the same team 16-1 in the Winter Olympics. It was only the second time in 13 years that the Soviet Union had not won the gold. Poland also played well in the 1980 Olympics and finished seventh out of twelve teams. They managed to pull off a huge upset in their first game by beating Finland 5-4, who would eventually advance to the medal round. In their next game, they played Canada and hoped to complete an even bigger upset. The Canadians didn't let this happen and beat the Poles 5-1. In the third game, Poland took on the five time Gold Medalists, The Soviet Union. The players knew that this would be a challenge because they had played the Soviets many times before and had lost by usually very lopsided scores, such as 8-3, 9-3, 16-1, and 20-0. The Polish team, however, had also beaten the Soviets once in the 1976 World Championship and some of the players from that game were still on the team. The team tried to keep the Russians down, but it was too much and the USSR stormed to an 8-1 win. With their toughest games out of the way, Poland would have one more chance to try and get to the Medal Round. They took on Holland and went down early in the first period but managed to tie it about four minutes later. The Dutch team scored twice more in the period to lead 3-1. Polish hero Wieslaw Jobczyk (who scored a hat trick in the 1976 upset against USSR) scored to put Poland within one goal but Holland stormed back to get two more goals before the third period to make it 5-2. The Polish ended up losing 5-3 and saw their hopes of the Medal round come to an end. They had one more game against Japan, who had not won any games in the tournament and only tied once. Poland burst out in the first period and scored 3 goals before twenty minutes had ended. They scored two more goals and Japan seemed out of it. The final score was 5-1 for Poland. The team's final record was 2-3-0 and received 4 points in the standings. By the early 1980s, though, the Polish economy went into the tail spin and the money for the hockey programs vanished. Despite this Poland has managed to produce some NHL caliber talent including Mariusz Czerkawski with the New York Islanders, Peter Sidorkiewicz for both the Hartford Whalers and the Ottawa Senators, and Krzysztof Oliwa for the New Jersey Devils where he won a Stanley Cup in 1999-2000. Hockey was first played in Poland in 1922. Three years later, four clubs in Warsaw established the Polish Ice Hockey Federation. The following year (1926), Poland became a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation."@en . Russian army eventually bogs down around Berlin, Germany, facing various European forces. 2031: Conflict with Russia 2032—Polish General Michał “Daddy” Marszalik transforms Army Division West into the Husaria mercenaries. 2034 Russians leave Poland. The war toll is 1 million dead, 3 millions refugees and a devastated country. 2035—In Oświęcim, the monks of Order of St. Sylvester construct a network of astral wards called the “Soul Barrier” to contain the ghosts of Nazi-era concentratin camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau. 2039—Polish President Wojciech Rybiński, in response to the Night of Rage, asks Russia to step in and stop the violence. With the assistance of the Russian military, he declares martial law, and names himself President of the new National Republic of Poland. Some see the hand of Saeder-Krupp in this event. 2040s—In Poland, General Kruk of Polish Intelligence founds the Armia Krajowa (Home or Domestic Army) (AK) to fight the Russian occupation (AK is formed in 2039). At an unspecified date, Polish government-in-exile is established in Paris, France. 2040—Military forces surround the awakened Białowieski forest and the Mazury toxic zone and set up the Mazury-Białowieża Containment Area to keep in the toxic creatures (from the swamp) and reawakaned animals from the forest that have been terrorizing the area from spreading. Major local town, Białystok, and nearby areas are evacuated. 2044— AK assassinates a prominent Russian diplomat in Poland. Russians and Polish-Russian collaborators face increasing hostility. 2047—Region of Małopolska (Lesser Poland) is declared a Free Trade Zone and its government is subcontracted to Saeder-Krupp. Capital of Małopolska Free Trade Zone is Kraków (Cracow). 2051—In Częstochowa, the Providence Corp (Korporacja Opatrzności Bożej) takes over all city administrative functions. 2051—In Poland, most of Saeder-Krupp’s Polish companies merge to form the mining and industrial Konglomerat Przemysłowo-Wydobywczy (KP-W, Mining-Industrial Conglomerate). 2053—In Poland, unrest over the Russian occupation increases. Strikes and riots leave the economy in shambles. As a result, President Rybiński’s grip on power begins to weaken. 2058—In Poland, the patriarch of the Wisner family, leader of the Katowice Syndykat, dies. 2061—In Warsaw-Łódź, Poland, Warsaw-Łódź Syndykat crime lord Rudy is murdered, allegedly by Sergei Lukin of Red Vory Russian mafia. Fearing all-out war, the AK brokers an arrangement between Zbychu, Rudy’s son and heir, and Jacek Wisner, boss of the Katowice Syndykat. In the following month the two mobs ruthlessly murder anyone who gets in their way as they absorb the smaller mobs, and support AK by waging war on the Red Vory and its allies in the Russian army. 2061—After the Halley's Comet pass, in Oświęcim, Poland, the ghosts become stronger and are able to bypass the spirit barrier. Breakouts become more and more common. 2062—In Małopolska, Poland, a small town is destroyed by a previously unknown, gray-and-gold dragon. The Polish Army as well as Russian special forces are called out but they are wiped out by the dragon, which the locals name Całożerca after a dragon from Polish mythology. The dragon swiftly vanishes into the Tatra Mountains where he sets up a domain called the “Carpathian Enclave.” Groups of fanatics flock to the Enclave claiming that he is the legendary Polish Dragon of Wawel reborn. 2062—At 9:30 on November 2, in Poland, the AK broadcasts the following message on the Polish Matrix: “Today starts a new chapter of Polish history: the National Liberation War. If you love your nation, stand up, take your weapon and fight. If you are an enemy, leave our country, or prepare to die.—AK” The AK cells then proceed to attack Matrix nodes, police stations and military bases throughout Poland. Deckers from the Polish Cybernetic Institute in Paris launch Operation Cruise to cripple the Polish Matrix, bringing business to a halt and sending the wealthy elite into a panic. The Russians are caught completely by surprise. At the same time, Husaria mercenaries—renamed the Liberation Army (Armia Wyzwoleńcza)—cross the Czech border in small assault groups, massing at the Sudety Mountains in preparation for an invasion. Within hours the Polish people hit the streets. Over the next few days, the authorities loose several cities while the Liberation Army continues to advance as far as Wrocław. Russian Chief Advisor General Mikhael Suchov responds by throwing President Rybiński aside and taking control of the Polish Army and ruthlessly strikes back with massive air strikes. The Liberation Army offensive, which becomes known as the Martyr’s Uprising, grinds to a halt. Lower Silesia becomes known as the Free Republic of Poland. 2062—In November, in Tricity, Poland, the city declares independence. 2062—In Warsaw-Łódź, Poland, the Warsaw Syndykat move into some of the abandoned buildings in the Pustynia zone and set up operations. The Red Vory, who have been using the area for BTL factories and drug labs, strike back and Pustynia erupts into open warfare. 2062-? State of war exists between Russia and Polish resistance controlled territories like Free Republic of Poland. Both sides are exhausted, and prepearing for a new stage in war, low-level fighting takes place all along the border, with Russians controlling most of the airspace and launching air raids, up to carpet bombing, at Polish-held targets."@en . . It should also be noted that the Cloven followed in the Chimera's footsteps and began taking Polish survivors and presumably began torturing, converting and/or eating them. "The first cinema in Poland (then occupied by the Russian Empire) was founded in Łódź in 1899, several years after the invention of the Cinematograph. Arguably the first Polish filmmaker was Kazimierz Prószyński, who filmed various short documentaries in Warsaw. His pleograph film camera has been patented already before the Lumière brothers' invention and he is credited as the author of the earliest surviving Polish documentary, as well as the first short narrative films. The earliest surviving feature film, the Antoś Pierwszy Raz w Warszawie was made in 1908 by Antoni Fertner. Soon Polish artists started experimenting with other genres of cinema: in 1910 Władysław Starewicz made one of the first animated cartoons in the world - and the first to use the stop motion technique. During the WWI the Polish cinema crossed borders. Films made in Warsaw or Vilna were often rebranded with German language intertitles and shown in Berlin. In November 1945 the communist government founded the film monopoly Film Polski and put well-known filmmaker Aleksander Ford in charge. Its output was limited, only thirteen features released between 1947 and its dissolution in 1952 and concentrated on Polish suffering at the hands of the Nazis. By the mid 1950s the increasingly liberal political climate gave rise to the Polish Film School movement, a training ground for some of the icons of the world cinematography. Andrzej Wajda's films offer insightful analyses of the universal element of the Polish experience - the struggle to maintain dignity under the most trying circumstances. His films defined several Polish generations. It is also important to note that during the 80's, the People's Republic of Poland instituted the martial law to vanquish and censor all forms of opposition against the communist rule of the nation, including outlets such as cinema and radio. A notable film to have emerged during this period was Ryszard Bugajski's 1982 film Interrogation. A considerable number of Polish film directors have worked in American studios. Animated films drew on a long tradition and continued to derive their inspiration from Poland's graphic arts."@en . . . . . "X-Men: First Class"@en . . .
