The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and its higher grade Oak Leaves and Swords was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. On 19 April 1945 he was captured by members of 1st Czechoslovak Partisan Brigade of Jan \u017Di\u017Eka, Group Olga, and became a prisoner of war. He later spent 10 years in Soviet captivity.
