Nearly half of each ship was taken up by massive gravity-manipulating engines that allowed it to hover over a fixed point on a planet's surface as well as being able to traverse interstellar distances. During the initial tour of the New York mothership, Diana, second in command under Supreme Commander John, claimed that motherships could travel at speeds approaching the speed of light. Subsequent events, however, demonstrate that they were capable of much higher speeds. Each mothership was serviced by more than 200 hanger/docking bays scattered around its volume. Each bay was capable of servicing three dozen small craft, ranging from skyfighters and squad vehicles to the larger Visitor transports and tankers. Large sections of each mothership were closed off by restricted-access yellow doors. The restriction was said to be required due to massive amounts of ambient radiation coming from the ship's drives. Mike Donovan would later discover this to be another Visitor deception, designed to conceal the massive water tanks and suspended animation pods installed to carry away the planet's water resources as well as enormous numbers of captured humans. Diana claimed that the crew of each mothership varied, but generally consisted of several thousand. In the re-imagined show, the design was altered and a new type of Mothership was seen in the re-vamped series."@en . .
