Kulagin also was an assistant coach with the national team, most famously in the Summit Series of 1972. In 1971 he got his first head coaching job with Krylya Sovetov Moscow (Wings of the Soviet). Kulagin took this low ranked club to the Soviet Union championship in 1974. He continued in the job until 1976. Kulagin became the head coach of the national team in 1974. He won the gold medal at the 1976 Olympics and at several world championships. But he was fired after a diapointing finish at the 1977 World Championship.
