Diligence described him as a short, bald man in a green uniform, whose \"bulging eyes and pursed lips\" made him look perpetually startled, but he still radiated a \"didactic sort of confidence\". He owned a pair of glasses made from lenses and leather straps, which he used when he did close handwork or read from one of his journals. Quant worked closely with Pomponderant when the tutor arrived at the crystal palace. Like many members of Amonwelle's scientific staff, Quant felt inspired by the man's endless curiosity. When the members of Diligence's caravan were heading back to The Wheel, they were accompanied by Quant Suff, Hettelock, and a third scientific worker. The three would provide knowledge and assistance to the travelers, as well as gather information about the outside world. Quant was the nominal leader of the caravan. Unlike the other members of the party, Quant actually wanted a closer look at the Aulmad, and were saddened to hear that they wouldn't have to go there. When they encountered a group of travelers in distress in the Siccative, he decided that they would offer help, but keep their weapons ready in case it as a trap set by dry pirates. Instead, it was an well-prepared ambush by Dubiel's soldiers, led by Lord Grott. Most of Quant's soldiers were killed, and the rest of the caravan was taken prisoner. When the group finally headed back to the crystal palace, Quant rode in Eil do Mer's spaceship, and emerged absolutely awestruck by the wonders he had seen."@en . "Alive"@en .
