It was last assigned to the 307th Air Refueling Group, stationed at Travis AFB, California. It was inactivated on 31 October 1983. Established on 1 September 1959 by Strategic Air Command at Travis AFB and equipped with KC-135 Stratotankers. Its mission was to provide air refueling to the B-52 Stratofortress strategic bombers of its parent 5th Bombardment Wing and other USAF units as directed. Reassigned to the SAC 14th Air Division in 1968 when the 5th BMW moved to Minot AFB, North Dakota; Reassigned to 47th Air Division on 31 March 1970; and reassigned back to 14th Air Division on 1 Apr 1972. On 1 July 1977 the 916th was assigned to the 307th Air Refueling Group. Inactivated on 31 Oct 1983 with the 307th ARG when SAC due to a force structure realignment.
