Initially a lukewarm member of the Polish Reformed Church, under the influence of Jesuits and his first wife he converted from Calvinism to Catholicism. He was podkomorzy of Podolia from 1621, castellan of Kamianets-Podilskyi from 1628, and voivod of the Bratslav Voivodeship from 1631 and the Podolia voivodeship from 1636. Potocki became Field Crown Hetman in 1652 and Great Crown Hetman in 1654. He was voivod of Kiev Voivodship from 1655 and voivod of Krak\u00F3w Voivodship from 1658. Potocki was also Starost of Halych, Radom, Krasnystaw, Ropczyce, Medyka, Bar, Grodziec, Kolomyia, Mostyska, Drahim\u00F3w, Letychiv and Dolina. He fought inter alia in the Battle of Cecora in 1620 and the Battle of Chocim in 1621. In 1654, Potocki was defeated at the Battle of Gr\u00F3dek Jagiello\u0144ski by the Russians and Cossacks. Soon after, during \"The Deluge\", he surrendered to Swedish troops. Later he joined the Tyszowce Confederation and fought on the side of King Jan II Kazimierz against Sweden. He defeated the Cossack and Russian army at the Battle of Ochmat\u00F3w in 1655. In 1660, together with Hetman Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski, he stopped the Russian army led by V.B. Shriemietiev and forced them to surrender at the at Cudn\u00F3w. From 1665 to 1666, Potocki fought on the side of the King, against the Lubomirski Rokosz.
