Gith was a forerunner who lead a thrall rebellion on Pharagos, rising up against their illithid masters. Toppling the illithid empire, she lead the forerunners to the Astral Plane. Soon after, a schism soon emerged among the forerunners, over a dispute with Zerthimon over her war plans. At the "Pronouncement of Two Skies," those who wished to follow Gith in her crusade against any race that might be a threat to them became the githyanki, while those who supported Zerthimon's calls for restraint became the githzerai and fled to the Ever-Changing Chaos of Limbo. In the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, Gith is the fictional leader of the thrall rebellion that toppled the illithid empire thousands of years in the past, and founder of the githyanki and githzerai races. Gith was a Zabrak female historically known for providing food under miraculous circumstances. In her honor, many other Zabrak female newborns were named after her. Many of the People's hearts shared this goal. However, another leader, Zerthimon, argued that the People were already free and should instead start mending the damage done to their race. He too expressed a goal that was in the hearts of many of the People. Gith could create these realms and observe them through a water pit. These realms would eventually lead to the self-destruction of the victim, after which would Gith feed from their energy and pain.

Sometime later, Gith traveled to the Lower Planes and sought to forge a pact with Tiamat. Though the deal was made, Gith's ultimate fate is unknown as she disappeared in the Nine Hells of Baator. Her advisor Vlaakith, the Lich Queen, became the current leader of githyanki. Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. Though Gith's fate is a mystery, her silver sword was given to Akachi as a gift from Myrkul but was lost after Akachi betrayed Myrkul and crusaded against the Wall of the Faithless. An unspecified amount of time later it was retrieved by Ammon Jerro with assistance from Mephasm and Prince Levistus. Jerro used it to battle the King of Shadows, and was shattered. This became known as the Pronouncement of Two Skies, a declaration of war that splintered the People into the races of githyanki (those who followed the warrior-queen Gith) and githzerai (those who followed the prophet Zerthimon). Battle was waged on the Blasted Plains, and the githyanki retreated to the Astral Sea while the githzerai withdrew to the chaos of Limbo. The two races have remained enemies ever since. Gith is said to have gone to the Nine Hells to serve Tiamat, the queen of evil dragons, as part of a pact between the githyanki and red dragons which was brokered by her advisor, Vlaakith. After this pact was made, the red dragon consort of Tiamat, Ephelomon, went to Gith's followers to tell them of her sacrifice and convey Gith's final decree, making Vlaakith the first queen of all the githyanki and ordering them to continue their conquests.
