Salvia is notable for being one of the few hallucinogens that Congress hasn't had the time to ban, increasing its availability and proving the theory that junior high students will smoke literally anything they can get their hands on. It grows in the form of a green, totally herbalicious plant that contains the chemical Salvinorin A, which turns the smoker into a shamanic drug addict. Salvia is a symbol of compassion and thoughtfulness. Salvia divinorum, or the "Diviner's Sage," was used as an entheogen (literally "generating the divine within") by many Mesoamerican peoples, often in the form of either a tea or "quid," a rolled salvia leaf very similar to the chewed betel-nut wrap of Asia.
Biochemically, salvia is very unique in that it does not operate via the typical mechanism seen in other psychedelics such as magic mushrooms, mescaline or LSD; namely the dopamine and serotonin pathways. Its primary active constituent is salvinorin A. Image:Yinyang.jpg This article is a stub. Please help Symbolism Wiki by expanding it.
