Olan Soule ("soo-LAY") was a character actor supreme, one who can be seen on reruns of Dragnet (1951), Dragnet 1967 and The Andy Griffith Show (1960) almost any day of the week. Born in La Harpe, Illinois, to Elbert and Ann Williams Soule, he descended from three Mayflower passengers. He left Illinois at age 7, moving to Des Moines, Iowa, until he was 17, when he launched his theatrical career joining the Jack Brooks tent show out of Sabula, Iowa. After leaving the tent show, Olan Soule was on stage in Chicago for seven years when he became involved in radio work in 1933. He was in the program Bachelor's Children for 10 years and, when the show moved to California, Soule became involved in film and television work. Soule was the first actor to voice Batman in animation. He voiced the character in two episodes of The New Scooby-Doo Movies and in all of the Superfriends series except The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians. Though slight of build and with a thin-faced appearance, Soule's diction and light voice established himself as a popular romantic lead in old-time radio anthologies and soap operas, including Bachelor's Children (1935-1946), as Sam Ryder, The Romance of Helen Trent (1933-1950s), as various suitors, sane and otherwise, and The First Nighter Program (1943-1952), as various leading men opposite Barbara Luddy, as well as parts on the adventure serials Jack Armstrong, All-American (as Coach Hardy) and Captain Midnight (as an OSS officer). Moving on-camera in the late 40s and early 50s, the thin, bespectacled Soule was typecast as fussy or nebbishy clerks, officials, doctors, and employers, appearing in such films as The Day the Earth Stood Still and Hitchcock's North by Northwest. He had recurring television roles on Dragnet (as lab analyst Ray Pinker), The Andy Griffith Show (choir director John Masters), and Perry Mason (the court clerk), plus guest appearances on I Love Lucy, Gunsmoke and Simon & Simon. As a voice actor, Soule played Batman (as well as butler Alfred Pennyworth) in six different animated series between 1968 and 1979, with Casey Kasem as Robin, including Superfriends (later playing Professor Martin Stein when Adam West took over as Batman). His other voice credits include the father in the Disney Christmas featurette The Small One and various parts in the scifi French animated feature Fantastic Planet. Olan Soule (February 28, 1909 – February 1, 1994) was an American character actor with hundreds of credits in films, radio, commercials, television and animation. __NOEDITSECTION__ Image:Information-silk.png|Character Template rect 0 0 20 20 Staff Template desc none Olan Soule Real Name Unknown First publication Unknown
