The Merry Men are the group of outlaws who follow Robin Hood in English literature and folklore. The band appears in the earliest ballads about Robin Hood and remain popular in modern adaptations. The early ballads give specific names to only three companions: Little John, Much the Miller's Son, and Will Scarlet. Joining them are between 20 and "seven score" outlawed yeomen. The most prominent of the Merry Men is Robin's second-in-command, Little John. He appears in the earliest ballads, and is mentioned in even earlier sources, such as Andrew of Wyntoun's Orygynale Chronicle of around 1420 and Walter Bower's expansion of the Scotichronicon, completed around 1440. Later ballads name additional Merry Men, some of whom appear in only one or two ballads, while others, like the minstrel Alan-a The Merry Men is a series of three short stories set about the gang and how it was formed. The first one is called Man at Bay. The second and third one have not been named. The Merry Men were a band of outlaws under the leadership of Robin Hood in Human mythology. Residing in Sherwood Forest in 12th century England, they became famous for robbing the rich to feed the poor and the rescue of Maid Marian from Nottingham Castle. In 2367, the entity known as Q transported the senior officers of the USS Enterprise-D into a recreation of Sherwood Forest and the story of Robin Hood in an attempt to teach Captain Picard a lesson about love. During the reenactment, each of the officers played the part of one of the Merry Men. Q assumed the role of Robin Hood's archenemy, the High Sheriff of Nottingham.
