Proteus is an Artificial Intelligence built by Achilles. It is originally tasked with protection of the Fleet of Worlds. Proteus later abandoned the Fleet. It is suggested that Proteus survived the events around the disappearance of the fleet and took up residence of a nearby star system. In Greek mythology, Proteus is a shapeshifting god of the sea who resided on the island of Pharos near Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea. He had the power to see the future, but would not reveal any details to humans unless they can capture him. To avoid capture, he would change his shape (he cannot lie). He was usually depicted as an old man. His lineage has varied through Greek history, sometimes being the son of Poseidon, sometimes Nereus, sometimes Oceanus. He is a prince and sacrificed himself for the execution in order to let Sinbad go find The Book, showing that he had complete trust in him. He and Sinbad were at first friends until Sinbad found out that Proteus was to marry Marina before the movie. Sinbad, in love with Marina, or at the very least her beauty, then ran away and the two haven't seen each other since, until the beginning of the movie. A large drawback to Proteus' powers is an insatiable need to "feed on" and siphon life energy. Although he is immensely powerful, Proteus has a strong weakness to most metals. His form energy form can be dispersed by metal, effectively "killing" him. In a host body, even the touch of metal against his skin burns him, and metal protruding through the insides of a body acts as a poison, often forcing him to abandon it and seek out a new host. Special circumstances occur when Proteus inhabits the body of Morph; this host body not only provides insulation from Proteus' metal weakness, but is also immune to physical degeneration. The lack of these vulnerabilities makes Proteus virtually unstoppable. The Exiles, however, were able to defeat him in this form by using a behavior modification device, brainwashing him into only accessing Morph's memories. Heather Hudson theorized that should Proteus re-emerge in Morph's body and gain the information stored in the Crystal Palace, it would bring about the complete and utter destruction of the Multiverse, one Earth and dimension at a time. His 3rd RPG story begins floating through space inside a covenant computer terminal after having been stolen by one of his creators. He has little memory, and finds a message left for him by himself, saying that he had to wipe his own memory in accordance with the Cole Protocol. He is eventually found by covenant forces, and then manages to escape his tiny network, and make his way to a UNSC ship called the Brahe. Once on board, he slipspace jumps to Sigma Octanus IV to get repairs. Proteus hears radio chatter about a missing marathon-class cruiser, the Prometheus, and sets out to find it - without anyone's permission to leave the docking bay. When the Brahe reaches the last known location of the Prometheus, Proteus finds only the Bellerophon and a few other UNSC vessels. Proteus fabricates an outright lie, saying that rebels have commandeered his vessel, and that the Brahe must be destroyed. After downloading himself onto a longsword fighter's computer and leaving the ship, the Brahe is destroyed. During his escape, Kevin came into contact with Phoenix, Polaris, and Multiple Man. While he was able to defeat Polaris and Multiple Man, he barely escaped with his life when he confronted Phoenix. Without the isosteric energy fields of his cell to sustain him, Kevin began to burn his body out. The only solution he could find was to possess human host bodies, one after another, including one of Multiple Man's duplicates, Ferdie Duncan, an unnamed policeman, and Jennie Banks. The organization used a woman named Harness and her mutant son, Piecemeal, to absorb all of the dispersed energy of Proteus. Piecemeal and Harness encountered the New Mutants, but escaped them. As the boy went about absorbing the energy, his body grew too large for his system to handle. Eventually, what was left of Proteus' consciousness and Piecemeal merged as one being after Piecemeal absorbed all the extant Proteus energy. The combined efforts of the New Warriors, the New Mutants, the Muir Islanders, and the original X-Factor wasn't enough against this new creature. When the amalgamated being decided that it would not find happiness, it decided to disperse once more, effectively committing "suicide". Proteus was a very old engine from the hills of Sodor with a magical lamp. Legend has it that his lamp was magic and if any engine ever found it, their wishes would come true. After that, angry and frustrated, Proteus began committing small crimes in Volos and each time he did, he took the form of a local villager. Finally, he took the form of Daniella's father, Thanis. In that form, he knocked Trilos unconscious and stole his money. The real Thanis was convicted of the crime and nearly had his hands cut off as a sentence until Hercules was able to convince Proteus to admit to his crimes.
