The Angry Video Game Nerd The Angry Video Game Nerd
rdfs:comment
James Rolfe is the Angry Video Game Nerd, formerly Angry Nintendo Nerd before he stopped focusing on just the NES (and realized he couldn't sell T-shirts with someone else's trademark on them), a misanthropic, foul-mouthed, chronically ill-tempered gaming geek with a predilection for Rolling Rock beer who plays weird, old, and, more often than not, Nintendo Hard games, some of them with the worst Fake Difficulty imaginable. We're talking truly terrible here. Epic Snark Bait. "The Nerd" holds a specific torch of hate towards licensed games, especially ones published by LJN Toys, which he sees as manipulating hopeful and oblivious kids into buying complete trash. Rolfe is currently in the process of filming a full length feature film in which he reviews E.T.: the Extra Terrestrial, considered by many to be the worst video game of all time. The Nerd does not limit himself to games, but has also reviewed consoles and accessories as well. The Angry Video Game Nerd (1980s? - March 10, 2009), real name James Rolfe, is a recurring character in the series. A member of the Network, the Angry Video Game Nerd is hired to help construct the King's portal to the Ark. He is later killed by the Arbiter aboard the station. In contrast to the character he portrays, James is actually a humble, shy, and down-to-earth gent in real life. Originally, he created the "Angry Nintendo Nerd" character as a joke amongst his friends in college, and only reviewed NES games. After his original two reviews became popular via YouTube, he changed his character's name to "Angry Video Game Nerd" to avoid copyright troubles with Nintendo and expand the amount of consoles he could review for. AVGN had a massive impact on the YouTube community, and inspired a wave of cheap imitation Angry Internet ReviewersTM that exploded in the late 2000s. “Cowabunga? Cowa-fucking-piece-of-dog-shit! (코와붕가? 코와 씨발 개똥조각같으니!)” —AVGN, 닌자 거북이 리뷰 中 “This game is diarrhea coming out of my dick! (이 게임은 내 꼬추에서 나온 설사에요!)” —AVGN, 닌자 거북이 리뷰 中 center The Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN, 앵그리 비디오 게임 너드) 는 예전에 발매되었던 비디오 게임들을 리뷰하는 인터넷 방송입니다. The Angry Video Game Nerd (originally called the Angry Nintendo Nerd) is an independent series on the Internet consisting of reviews by James Rolfe about his experience with bad video games. The show premiered on Cinemassacre on November 4, 1990 with it's first review about the game "Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest" for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The series began as a feature on YouTube, and later joined ScrewAttack Entertainment, which would later have three of its features, including the AVGN, transferred to GameTrailers exclusively. The show, formerly known as The Angry Nintendo Nerd, was renamed because the show started reviewing games on other consoles, and also to prevent any trademark issues with Nintendo. He has also reviewed every Godzilla movie, including the 1998 film in a chain of videos called the Godzillathon. The reviews can be seen here. James Rolfe, Also known as: The Angry Video Game Nerd, Angry Nintendo Nerd, AVGN, ANN is a Highly Reputable video game reviewer, who also does moviemaking on the side, in his alias, Cinemassacre, however, the AVGN character is arguably the most popular. The series began as a feature on YouTube, and later joined ScrewAttack Entertainment, which would later have three of its features, including the AVGN, transferred to Hyrule Castle. The show was formerly known as The Angry Nintendo Nerd, a title that was abandoned to avoid legal issues due to the Nintendo trademark, and because the show started reviewing games on other consoles.

The Nerd is a short-tempered and foul-mouthed video game fanatic. He derives comic appeal from excessive and inventive use of profanity, frequent displays of explicit gestures, and a habitual consumption of beer (Rolling Rock). A particular characteristic, which has become something of a trademark of his character, is for him to describe, in great detail, extremely repulsive and painful, usually firmly scatological acts, and to claim that he would rather endure them than to play the game that he is reviewing. Varying amounts of physical comedy are mixed into the verbal abuses. Many of his longer episodes also feature storylines to them, and sometimes the Nerd is literally joined by some of the characters from the games and media he reviews. James also invents and creates a variety of characters to act with or use as companions in his episodes. Super-Mecha-Death Christ, a powerful superweapon which first appeared in Cinemassacre's Wizard of Oz 3: Dorothy goes to Hell, uses MechaGodzilla's chest laser and M.O.G.U.E.R.A.'s chest maser as part of his attacks. In 2009, the Nerd played Godzilla: Monster of Monsters, Godzilla 2: War of the Monsters, Super Godzilla, Godzilla: Kaiju Daikessen, and the Gameboy Godzilla. He then played Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee, Godzilla: Save the Earth and Godzilla: Unleashed. Amazed at the massive difference in quality of the games, he dropped an almighty f-bomb, and then proceeded to swipe SNES and Super Famicom games off his shelves while emitting Godzilla's roar. Then, his final response was to say "I was born too ****ing early!" The following year, in his Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Revisited episode, he remarks: "Did you know that this game was created by Toho, the company that made the Godzilla films? No wonder Godzilla's been pissed off lately!", making reference to Toho's active role in video games throughout the 1980s and 90s. He has also reviewed every Godzilla movie, including the 1998 film in a chain of videos called the Godzillathon. The reviews can be seen here. In 2013, he and his close friend, Mike Matei, decided to review Godzilla: Unleashed on an episode of James and Mike Mondays, and were very positive about its gameplay, although James stated that the trilogy of 3D Godzilla games had the same style of gameplay. They also talked about the then-upcoming 2014 film throughout most of the review. In many of his videos, several Godzilla toys and a poster can be seen in the background, including a 1-foot-tall Godzilla figure which he briefly showed off in one of his Godzillathon episodes. “Cowabunga? The series began as a feature on YouTube, and later joined ScrewAttack Entertainment, which would later have three of its features, including the AVGN, transferred to Hyrule Castle. The show was formerly known as The Angry Nintendo Nerd, a title that was abandoned to avoid legal issues due to the Nintendo trademark, and because the show started reviewing games on other consoles. The titular Nerd character is an ill-tempered and foul-mouthed video game fanatic. He derives comic appeal from excessive and inventive use of profanity, frequent displays of explicit gestures, and heavy consumption of beer, particularly Rick Roll or Yuengling, to "soothe the pain". A particular characteristic is his favorable comparison of extremely repulsive and painful, usually firmly scatological, acts to playing the games he reviews. Varying amounts of physical comedy are mixed into the verbal abuse. In recent years, James has expanded beyond the Nerd videos, posting videos of him reviewing monster movies, ranting on inconveniences in life, and playing games with his effeminate friend Mike Matei. James also runs the Cinemassacre production company which specializes in B-movies, though no one seems to care about them other than his hardcore fans. The Nintendo Entertainment System was a landmark in the history of video gaming - it was the first Japanese console to make a splash in the US, the first console released after The Great Video Game Crash of 1983, and the first console that most members of Generation Y have firsthand memories of playing. During its lifespan of nearly a decade, the console introduced now-classic characters like Mario, Link, and Mega Man, saw video games shift from thinly veiled excuses to kill bad guys to complex plots, and produced scores of truly great games, some of which remain classics to this day. But it also produced some real stinkers, and that's where the Angry Video Game Nerd comes in. His reviews inevitably spiral downward into a barely-coherent rant peppered liberally with Cluster F-Bombs and scatological references culminating in a violent frothing rage that puts the Incredible Hulk to shame. The Nerd gets frequent unwanted visits from the stars of the games he plays, from Bugs Bunny to Freddy Krueger. Note, however, that a handful of episodes are not so much about a single shitty game as they are about a certain console or accessory (there are even a few that aren't about video games at all). Aside from giving reviews, the Nerd has also given a bit of video game history, such as a summary of the infamous Console Wars. When he isn't getting his nerd on, James Rolfe maintains a website at Cinemassacre.com where he showcases various other ventures, including his own independent films and an annual "Monster Madness" feature each October counting down to Halloween. The AVGN had a long and violent "rivalry" with The Nostalgia Critic that came to a head with a Battle Royale With Cheese in October 2008, and another in May 2009, this time a Massive Multiplayer Crossover with his guitar guy in the fray. See the Critic's page for more details (and TGWTG Year One Brawl for said crossover). In Real Life, Rolfe and Doug Walker (The Nostalgia Critic) are good friends and Rolfe has even guested in several other That Guy With The Glasses projects, including Cameos in both of the site's subsequent anniversary specials. In 2010, he announced he will cut back on episodes doing approximately only one a month for the time being, releasing each around the first Wednesday of each month. Previously he had a new one every 2-3 weeks. In September he announced his intention to make an Angry Video Game Nerd movie!. In 2011, he announced that due to pre-production on the Nerd movie, he will be scaling back production on videos further, to videos that are about as long as his early YouTube ones. Rolfe is currently in the process of filming a full length feature film in which he reviews E.T.: the Extra Terrestrial, considered by many to be the worst video game of all time. The Nerd does not limit himself to games, but has also reviewed consoles and accessories as well.
