September 18th is "Chushu no Meigetsu" (mid-autumn full moon), traditionally a good night for viewing the moon. This night used to be called "Jugoya" (meaning "the fifteenth night") because it fell on August 15th in the old calendar. In Japan, there is a tradition of putting susuki and mochi on the family alter on this day. The susuki represents autumn and the mochi symbolizes the image of a rabbit making mochi (which is what Japanese people see when they look at the moon).
