While he appears most identical to most Toads in terms of his appearance, Toad is actually an entirely different and unique character by his own means. He constantly plays the role of Princess Peach's loyal servant or her Mushroom Retainer. His roles in the Mario RPG and Paper Mario games are often minor; however, he is still often seen to being rather courageous as he tries to assist the Mario Bros. to the very best of his ability. Toad, also known as Kinopio in Japan, is a fictional humanoid mushroom that is both a single character and the collective name of the "Mushroom People" found in the Mushroom Kingdom. The Toad species first appeared in Super Mario Bros. as seven guards that serve Princess Peach, called Mushroom Retainers. In games prior to Paper Mario, which features an entire race of Toad inhabiting Toad Town, the capital of the Mushroom Kingdom, manuals referred to them as Mushroom People, but they were always referred to as Kinopio in Japanese languages. As a singular character, Toad is known for being the long time servant and attendant of Princess Peach. He constantly tries to protect her; however, he prominently fails almost every time during the events of her kidnapping. Despite his cowardice, Toad is notable for being one of the few characters who help the Mario Bros. through a variety of different ways throughout their adventures. Toad has even made his own fair share of heroic contributions as seen in games such as in Wario's Woods (a game that features Toad himself as the main hero) and Super Mario Bros. 2. Toad, known in Japan as Kinopio, is a fictional humanoid mushroom that is both a single character and the collective name of the "Mushroom People" found in the Mushroom Kingdom. Toad has even made his own fair share of heroic contributions as seen in games such as in Wario's Woods (a game that features Toad himself as the main hero) and Super Mario Bros. 2. Toad (キノピオ, Kinopio) is a humanoid mushroom-like character who usually serves as a major ally for Mario and Luigi. As an individual character, Toad made his debut in Super Mario Bros. as one of the several Mushroom Retainers (Toads who protect Peach the most), then Super Mario Bros. 2, where he was a playable character (the fastest and strongest one however he had the weakest jump) on equal standing to the other protagonists — Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach. His relationship to the other main characters of the series is unclear (as most of those between characters in the Mario series are), but it can be seen that he is a good friend of Mario and Princess Peach. He lives with the princess in her castle as her personal servant and constant companion. Toads as a whole are an entire species. In the primary series they don't tend to have individual names unless it's a prominent character such as Toadsworth in Super Mario Sunshine. This, however, is not the case with the RPG's, in which each has a distinct title. In their first appearance they are most notable for uttering one of the more famous video game lines: "Thank you Mario. But our princess is in another castle!". Like Yoshi, it's hard to tell whether or not a Toad is the character from the previous games or just another member of the species due to his generic appearance.
