Dathomir was considered a temperate and beautiful planet by Human standards, with a varied terrain that included coastal lakes and tar-pits, thick forests and snow-capped mountain peaks, powerful rivers and broad savannas, small icecaps and dramatic rift valleys. Even under the New Republic, however, nine-tenths of the planet remained unexplored and uninhabited, with the population limited to a relatively small area along the edge of one of the three main continents, a zone of uplands and river plains bounded on one side by the unsailed ocean and on the other by vast expanses of desert. Dathomir was a remote, neutral planet in the Quelli sector and the home of the Nightsisters. The planet, lit red by its central star, had numerous continents that were overrun with vegetation, forests, and swamplands. The dark side of the Force had an immensely strong presence on Dathomir, which allowed for the nurturing of many malevolent Force wielders native to the planet. The Nightsisters, also known as the Dathomir witches, made their home in the swamps, and wielded magicks fueled by Dathomir's own power. Dathomir was also home to the Nightbrothers, Zabraks who were ruled by the Nightsisters. During the Clone Wars, Dathomir would come under attack multiple times due to the machinations of Mother Talzin and her rival Darth Sidious, leading to the destruction of most of the Nightsisters and settlements on the planet by the Confederacy of Independent Systems after conquering it. Asajj Ventress, a Nightsister trained by Count Dooku, returned to Mother Talzin after her master betrayed her, drawing Dathomir to Dooku's attention and concluding in a battle where all the Nightsisters but Ventress and Mother Talzin were killed. In 2 BBY, Maul returned to Dathomir with the Jedi rebel Ezra Bridger to conduct a ritual that involved summoning the spirits of fallen Nightsisters in order to reveal fragments of a holocron vision. As a result, Maul and Ezra learned that the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi held the key to destroying the Sith and that he resided on a planet with twin suns. Dathomir was a planet. On 7/2/46, a Sovereignty army entered the system to stop a rumored civil war between the witches and the Nightsisters. When they landed, they found the Nightsisters attacking the Singing Mountain Clan and intervened to the slaughter of both sides. Siron had worked with Eliana to manipulate the situation on both sides to getting the Nightsisters to attack at the right time for the Sovereigns to come. The other witch clans came to the rescue of their sisters and attacked the Sovereigns. These reinforcements were led by Vanya Wolfe and Rachel Hart who had been living with the clans since the Assault on the Temple all but destroyed the Jedi Order. Eliana ordered a retreat and then bombarded the battlefield and all the other villages from orbit. The few survivors were rounded up for slaves while Vanya, his [Jedi Padawan|Padawan]], and a dozen witches escaped in a captured Sovereignty shuttle. For over a year and a half, the planet was nearly abandoned by all sentient life. Following the Unification War, S'Rai Dah took interest in the planet and founded a series of training grounds for Force users.
