Clawgrip is located in a small area waiting to battle the player. In battle, Clawgrip grabs rocks from a larger pile of them and hurls them at the player; the rocks must be grabbed before they fall into a nearby pit. Clawgrip must be hit five times with rocks in order to be defeated. Clawgrip is one of the few enemies in Super Mario Bros. 2 that does not originate in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. Clawgrip replaces the third occurrence of Mouser (a white variety that also does not exist in Super Mario Bros. 2) in Doki Doki Panic. According to the original game manual, it states that Clawgrip "grows suddenly" but this is not apparent in the game itself.
